The Center for Logic, Epistemology and History of Science (CLE) is pleased to inform that its members Prof. Dr. Walter Alexandre Carnielli and Prof. Dr. Juliana Bueno-Soler have received the 2022 edition of the "Newton da Costa" Logic Award, promoted by the Brazilian Society of Logic (SBL), for the unpublished article “Where the truth lies: a paraconsistent approach to Bayesian epistemology”.
This Logic Award honors the academic career and original scientific and philosophical contributions of Prof. Dr. Newton Carneiro Affonso da Costa.
Newton da Costa, one of the creators of paraconsistent logics, played an important role in the creation of the CLE in 1976/1977, remaining up to date as one of its most important and active members. In 1977, together with Ayda Ignez Arryda, he conceived the creation and was the first president of the Brazilian Society of Logic (SBL). The magnitude and repercussion of his work made him one of the most cited and honored Brazilian scientists internationally.
The award-winning article will appear in the journal Logica Universalis (Birkhäuser) and is part of a series of other works by the same authors that emphasize new theories of probability and their applications, developed in research projects sponsored by the CLE.
